GI Bill for Spouses

The United States has always taken pride in how it cares for the members of the Armed Forces.  When it comes to motivating and supporting the men and women of the most powerful military in the world, America has also taken pride in helping the families of those who fight every day.  For this reason, the law enables eligible spouses to receive educational benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill or the new Post-9/11 GI Bill, which took effect August 1, 2009.

Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, an eligible veteran may transfer any unused benefits to a spouse after serving six years of active duty, with a commitment to serve four more years.  The spouse can begin using the benefits immediately upon transfer, and the benefits are limited to 36 months’ worth (four academic years) of educational expenses.  Also under the Post-9/11 GI Bill only, a service member may transfer benefits only while serving as a member of the Armed Forces.

The requirements for transferability of benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill are similar to those under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.  A service member with at least six years of service can transfer benefits to a spouse (who can begin using benefits immediately).  As with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the total benefits are limited to 36 months’ worth of educational costs.

As is the case with a service member receiving benefits, an eligible spouse may use education benefits to take courses at any accredited, degree-granting institution, including community colleges, four year colleges and universities, career and vocational schools, and flight training programs.
